Santa Rosa, CA 95409

Hood Mountain Regional Park and Open Space Preserve sits on the outskirts of the Sonoma Valley, around 5 miles southeast of Santa Rosa, CA. Covering 3,600 acres, this wilderness park boasts over 19 miles of trails catering to hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. At 2,730 feet, Hood Mountain stands as the highest peak in the Mayacamas Mountains, offering breathtaking views of the Sonoma Valley and beyond from its Gunsight Rock outcropping along Highway 12.

With a trail network exceeding 19 miles, Hood Mountain Regional Park presents a diverse landscape of mixed-conifer forests, meadows, and creek crossings. The terrain is rugged, promising challenging yet rewarding hikes with panoramic vistas of Sonoma and Napa counties, as well as notable Bay Area landmarks on clear days. Among the popular trails is the Lawson Trail, providing multiple vantage points overlooking the Sonoma Valley, Napa hills, and San Francisco Bay.

Visitors can access Hood Mountain via its northwest entrance on Los Alamos Road or the southwest entrance on Pythian Road. The park offers two environmental campsites at Merganser Pond, reachable by a roughly two-mile hike from the Pythian Road trailhead. These remote campsites provide picnic tables, food lockers, and pit toilets, ideal for a back-to-nature camping experience away from modern amenities.
