Established in 1891 by Rensselaer Luther Holman, Holman’s began as a dry goods store in the heart of Pacific Grove and evolved into the largest independently owned department store between Los Angeles and San Francisco. The Holman Building, originally rebuilt in 1924 to accommodate a growing customer base, became a shopping destination known for its wide variety of merchandise and significant mail order business from around the globe.

Throughout the years, the Holman Building has hosted numerous retail shops, including an antique mall, and remains historically significant for its connection to notable figures like John Steinbeck. Currently undergoing renovation, the building is being transformed into luxury residences while retaining its iconic status in the community.
