The Historic Gardens of Alcatraz Project is a collaborative effort between the Garden Conservancy, the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, and the National Park Service to restore and maintain the gardens that were once an integral part of life on Alcatraz Island. These gardens, created by officers, families, and prisoners, showcase the resilience of plants in a harsh environment and highlight the ecological benefits and aesthetic possibilities of sustainable gardening.
