History

In 1867 Joseph Welch created Welch's Big Trees Resort, which is where the current old-growth redwood grove stands. With the help of William Jeter, Santa Cruz County bought 120 acres in 1930, which included the incomparable 40-acre Big Tree Grove. By 1950, there was only one member of the Cowell family left.
