Fort Winfield Scott, established on June 19, 1912, served as a coast artillery post and headquarters for the Artillery District of San Francisco within the Presidio. It housed seventeen Endicott gun batteries, which were operational from 1891 until 1946, and played a pivotal role in the coastal defenses of the San Francisco Bay Area.
Following World War II, Fort Scott was reclassified as a subpost of the Presidio, briefly hosting the U.S. Army's Coast Artillery School after its relocation from Fort Monroe, Virginia. However, the school ceased operations shortly thereafter as advancements in military technology rendered the coast artillery system obsolete.
