Mill Valley, CA 94942

The Dipsea Race, established in 1905, holds the distinction of being the oldest trail race in America. Taking place annually on the second Sunday in June, this iconic event covers a picturesque 7.4-mile course from Mill Valley to Stinson Beach, renowned for its breathtaking beauty. With its challenging terrain of stairs and steep trails, the Dipsea Race is known for its grueling and treacherous nature. What sets it apart is its unique handicapping system, which allows men and women of all ages to emerge as winners. Limited to approximately 1,500 runners due to safety and environmental concerns, the Dipsea Race attracts participants from around the world, although it primarily caters to Northern California contestants.

Recently, the Dipsea Race community mourned the loss of two legends: Darryl Beardall, a Hall of Fame member who participated in an impressive 59 Dipsea Races and won the event twice, and Jim Weil, the father of the modern-day Dipsea Race handicap system. Beardall's passion for the race extended beyond his own achievements, as he actively contributed to the event until his passing. Weil, an MIT and UC Berkeley graduate, revolutionized the race's handicapping format, ensuring fairness and safety for all participants. His meticulous tracking and modeling skills earned him a place in the Dipsea Hall of Fame. The Dipsea Race continues to captivate runners and spectators alike, embodying the spirit of endurance and camaraderie.
