Desert Island members and visitors mix in an updated, upgraded, thoroughly reanimated country club scene. Only on DI can you play a public course like a private club member, with many of the amenities and privileges traditionally associated with private clubs. The Desert Island course is scenic from any angle, challenging but not outlandish, with gentle slopes, refreshment stations, shade trees, short distances between greens and tee boxes, and many personal amenities, from chilled towels to insulated water bottles. Wherever you are on the course, you're moments from what you need. On a hot day, Desert Island is the coolest place to be. History Established in 1971. Desert Island opened in 1971, after Thunderbird Country Club member L.L. "Red" Oakes drilled a well that created the oasis, located at the corner of Frank Sinatra and Bob Hope Drives in Rancho Mirage. Formerly The S Resort, Desert Island Golf & Country Club came under new ownership in December 2021 opening to the public for golf and dining.
