History

My first Cuba trip was in February 2004 with my wife and 6 year-old son Zack. We took him out of his 1st grade class and traveled to Cuba bearing two 50# suitcases filled with medicines and school supplies Zack raised from his schoolmates' families. We traveled with an introduction letter from CAJM, the Cuba American Jewish Mission, an authorized charity group that benefits the Cuban people, and the medicines were assembled for us by Dr. Bob Safran and June Safran, heads of the CAJM in Oakland, California. Before leaving on our trip we visited with the Safrans and were treated to a light meal and slide show about CAJM's non-denominational work in Cuba that benefits all Cubans by dispensing needed medicines and OTC medical supplies through the Patronato at the Jewish Synagogue in Havana. After friends began asking about our Cuba travels and as Cuba opened up to Americans, we organized OFAC-licensed baseball team trips to Cuba for Bay Area teams and their families.
