History

In 1918 Crystal Cave in Sequoia National Park was discovered as a national park feature by two young park trail crew workers on their days off. Imagine their surprise when fishing along Cascade Creek they sensed a cool breeze coming from the hill behind them, as if the mountain was breathing. Curious to find the source of the cool breeze, they found what became known as Crystal Cave. In the spring of 1940 Crystal Cave opened for public tours. With 1.2 million years of geologic history behind it and many years in front of it, Crystal Cave continues to attract scientists, cultural historians, and visitors from around the United States and the world.
