The Alameda County District Attorney's Office was formed in 1853 with the appointment of its first District Attorney, William Combs. Its attorneys are recruited to the position from private practice and are groomed for private or government practice. Its inspectors division conducts a wide variety of criminal investigations including investigations into officer-involved shootings, misconduct by public officials, white-collar crimes, consumer and welfare frauds and family support matters. The video unit produces videotaped educational programs for its office members and affiliates. The agency tapes crime scenes, conducts videotaped re-enactments and provides other video-related services. The victim consultant unit provides crisis intervention, emergency assistance, resource and referral counseling, direct counseling, assistance in property return, orientation to the criminal justice system, court escort, case monitoring information, employer intervention and training programs to agencies within the criminal justice system.
