The Office of the Public Defender was established in 1948. The office provides legal representation and advice to individuals financially unable to employ counsel in adult criminal, juvenile delinquency, mental conservatorship, appropriate family law and probate cases. It provides defense solutions for more than 35,000 cases. The Office of the Public Defender defends persons charged with misdemeanor offenses, as well as represents clients in developmentally disabled and conservatorship cases. It provides program support in the form of legal research, investigative services and administration. The office also defends persons accused of felonious crimes, such as homicide and death penalty cases. It works with a team of over 170 employees. The Office of the Public Defender is governed by the County of Sacramento in California.
