He has a Bachelor of Science degree in animal science with an education minor from the University of California, Davis, and a Master of Arts degree in educational administration from the University of the Pacific, Stockton, California. He has over 100 graduate units in curriculum and instruction, and holds three K-12 California clear teaching credentials: Multiple Subject, Single Subject ( life science ) and Administrative Services. Since 2004, he has taught master's level educational research design coursework for an online university. He is a private pilot and holds an FAA Advanced Ground Instructor certificate.
