The Cherry Blossom Festival SoCal began in April 2002 in Pasadena, CA, and aimed to celebrate the culture of Americans of Japanese descent. After several years and over 60,000 attendees in its final iteration, the festival was moved to the Little Tokyo District of Los Angeles, where it continued for five years before its closure in 2011.
Efforts are underway to revive the festival, with plans to redesign and host it back in Pasadena, CA. The festival has a rich history of community involvement, including a significant contribution of 500 cherry trees to the city and honors recognizing local performers and contributors.
