History

The Center for Photographic Art (CPA) was created in 1992 after the renowned Friends of Photography, founded in 1967 by such luminaries as Ansel Adams, Cole Weston, Brett Weston and Morley Baer, moved to San Francisco. Grounded in the regional traditions of California's Central Coast and the photographers who were attracted to it, the Center for Photographic Art promotes excellence in photography through exhibitions, educational programs and publications.

Specialties

The Center for Photographic Art is a nonprofit photography gallery that offers contemporary photography exhibitions as well as classes, lectures, special events and members' programs. We are inspired by the belief that photography is a powerful language for creating, interpreting and expressing meaning. Informed by regional traditions of mentorship, respect for craft and mutual support, we are committed to artistic development, creative inquiry and education.
