Cathay General Bancorp is the holding company for Cathay Bank, a California state-chartered bank. Founded in 1962, Cathay Bank offers a range of financial services and operates 29 branches in California, four branches in New York State, one branch in Massachusetts, one in Houston, Texas, one in Washington State and representative offices in Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Taipei. In addition, the bank's subsidiaries, Cathay Investment Company and GBC Investment & Consulting Company, maintain an office in Taipei. Cathay Bank opened for business with the mission of providing financial services to the growing but underserved Chinese-American community in the greater Los Angeles area, thus becoming the first Chinese-American bank in Southern California. Recognizing that the community it served was part of a more diverse one; the bank adopted the motto An Open Door for All.
