Carmel Mission, formally called San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo Mission, in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, was the second of the 21 missions to be established by the Spanish Franciscan friars in the 18th century. The renovated mission's centerpiece is the Basilica Church with its beautiful high arched ceilings, tall altarpieces and collection of Spanish Colonial liturgical art and artifacts. Visitors are welcome to take a self-guided tour of the Basilica, Harry Downie Museum, Munras Family Heritage Museum, Jo Mora Chapel Gallery and Convento Museum. Individuals and families interested in California history, California missions, gardens and architecture would enjoy visiting Carmel Mission.
