The Campus Research Machine Shop in La Jolla, CA is a laboratory within the UC San Diego Division of Biological Sciences that focuses on studying the development of the blood-forming system in vertebrate embryos, particularly in zebrafish. They utilize the advantages of the zebrafish system to investigate the ontogeny of hematopoiesis and immunity, including the visualization of blood cells in translucent embryos and genetic dissection of pathways important for blood cell specification and function.

Their research aims to understand how hematopoietic stem cells emerge and the role of various factors in blood cell development. They have published studies on topics such as the migration of endothelial cells to support hematopoietic stem cells, the role of Notch signaling in the formation of the hematopoietic niche, and the regulation of erythropoiesis in certain diseases. The Traver Lab at UC San Diego is dedicated to advancing knowledge in the field of hematopoiesis and contributing to the understanding of blood cell development in vertebrates.
