Established in 1905, CAL FIRE, also known as the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection is a state agency specializing in protecting natural resources from fire on land designated by the State Board of Forestry as State Responsibility Area (SRA). The department provides fire protection and stewardship services for approximately 31 million acres of California's privately-owned wild lands. . Besides wildfires, it has capabilities to respond to various emergencies or disasters, including medical aids, hazardous material spills, swift water rescues, search and rescue missions, civil disturbances, train wrecks, floods, earthquakes, and more. In addition, the agency provides a variety of emergency services to over 36 counties across California through contracts with local governments.
