The Cable Car Barn in San Francisco, California, is the last surviving barn and power house of the once numerous cable car systems in the city. Built in 1887, it housed the cable cars and propelling machinery for various railway companies before becoming the property of the Municipal Railway in 1944.
Originally powered by steam boilers, the barn was converted to electric motor operation after the 1906 Earthquake. Despite the worldwide popularity of cable car systems in the 1880s, San Francisco remained the cable car capital and continues to be so today.
