Butte Water District

Butte Water District (BWD) is a California Water District located in the Sacramento Valley, serving the cities of Biggs and Gridley. Established in 1952, BWD is responsible for the distribution of water and irrigation to agricultural users in its service area, which encompasses a diverse range of crops including rice, peaches, prunes, walnuts, almonds, and pasture.

With a rich history dating back to the acquisition of the Sutter-Butte Canal Company's canal system and pre-1914 water rights in 1956, BWD has played a vital role in the region's water management. As a joint member of the Joint Water Districts Board, BWD operates under a settlement agreement with the State, allowing for approximately 133,000 acre-feet of water diversions annually. Situated south of Thermalito Afterbay, west of the Feather River, and northeast of the Sutter Buttes, BWD continues to fulfill its mission of providing reliable irrigation services to support the thriving agricultural community within its boundaries.
