Casa Madrona, originally built as a private residence in 1885 by lumber baron William G. Barrett, has a rich history of transformation from a family home to a guest house, and eventually to a hotel known as the Casa Madrona Hotel. Over the years, it has served various roles, including a short-lived bordello, a temporary lodging for military families during World War II, and a fine dining establishment called Le Vivoir.

After falling into disrepair, Casa Madrona was revitalized by Robert Henri and Marie-Louise Deschamps in 1959, becoming one of the Bay Area's premier restaurants. Today, under the stewardship of John Mays, the property has been restored and expanded to include sixteen hillside cottages, continuing its legacy as a sought-after hotel and spa destination.
