Bighorn Institute

Bighorn Institute, founded in 1982, is a privately funded nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation of wild sheep, with a particular focus on the endangered Peninsular bighorn in Southern California. Recognized as an official recovery facility for this species, the Institute has successfully released 127 bighorn sheep into the wild through its captive breeding and population augmentation programs.

In addition to its breeding efforts, Bighorn Institute actively monitors wild bighorn populations along the southern rim of the Coachella Valley, from Palm Springs to La Quinta. The organization has played a crucial role in preventing the extinction of local herds, thanks to the ongoing support of its Board of Directors and members.
