The Berkley Police Association (BPA) consists of about 170 police officers who are sworn officers of the Berkeley PD. Community Interaction & Service Enforcement is not our #1 goal. It's not about how many people can we ticket or arrest today. We are having more in depth communications with people. We are more sensitive to what the community wants from us. We're trying to listen and listening is a huge part in order for us to help improve quality of life for our neighborhoods.
To be distinguished from the Berkeley Police Department (BPD), the Berkeley Police Association (BPA) is similar to a union of police officers who are sworn officers of the BPD. Since we are an association, membership does not include the Police Chief or civilian officers such as dispatchers, jailers, and clerical staff. We've built and continue to build trust among the community, and represent the brightest, most educated, level headed, and empathetic police force a community could ask for. You'll see that we are more likely to spend extra time on a call for help, provide reassurance, empathize with terrifying experiences, and provide as good of an experience in the face of such difficult situations. This is the exceptional quality of service we strive to provide our neighborhoods. Delivering police services to the City of Berkeley and neighboring cities who need our help. You may see a beat officer in a black and white patrol car, an officer on foot, officers riding bicycles or motorcycles, or officers speaking to community members or business owners about safety tips or crime prevention for their neighborhood or business district. We are also proud of the various community, regional, state and national charities who benefit from our support and involvement, including the Berkeley Humane Society, Special Olympics, The Annual MLK Jr. Breakfast Event, and Turkey Basket Giveaway Project just to name a few. You too can donate through the BPA website!
