History

We realized that there is no outdoor weekly market in Northern California for producers of non-food items that meet the criteria of sustainablility and localism. Julia Fry, co-founder of Beehive, had a green laundry care line that was not accepted by the Berkeley Farmer' Market. She and Isaac Cronin formed the Beehive Market to address this need and to help similar small businesses cross-pollinate with the green community. There is a also an opportunity to create an incubator for green businesses. The market started two weeks ago and there are already 50 food and lifestyle vendors participating. The market will run all year every Satudrayd and admission is free.

Specialties

We are the founders and managers of a localist, sustainabel lifestyle market in West Berkeley called Beehive Market. The Beehive Market, is a weekly 'Bee' market (NOT a Flea)- that supports and cross pollinates vibrant green local businesses, Unlike the limited scope of a farmer's market (strictly produce), or a flea market (only furniture, clothing and household goods) the 'Bee' market concept is a new category invented by co-founders Julia Fry and Isaac Cronin to broaden the definition of open air markets to be more inclusive of green lifestyles. In the same way bees fly from flower to flower cross pollinating and gathering honey, Beehive Market vendors offer everything for a sustainable localist lifestyle in one place: from fresh local organic produce to alternative transportation, ecofashion, organic personal care, garden supplies, natural pet and kids products, vegan delights and a fabulous food court, showcasing local bands.

It's small, but the vendors were very friendly and prices were good. Oddly, there was only one actual produce stand the day I swung through; the rest was an ecclectic mix of the related...
