History buffs will enjoy touring the Battleship USS Iowa in San Pedro, Calif. It's the only battleship museum on the West Coast.

While exploring the six decks (be sure to wear comfortable, low-heeled shoes), visitors get an up-close look at how thousands of sailors served aboard this city at sea from World War II through the Cold War.

Best and worst time to go to the Battleship USS Iowa
The best time to go is on Veterans Day in November or Memorial Day in May, when visitors can meet USS Iowa veterans gathered for special events. However, for people who dislike crowds, those holidays are probably the worst time to go.

Must see/do at the Battleship USS Iowa
Visitors should be sure to let the staff know if someone in their party is a veteran. The veteran will be announced and welcomed over the ship's PA system, and thanked by crew members for their service.

Kids will have fun taking a scavenger hunt that features Vicky the Dog, the battleship's mascot during WWII.

Fans of '80s music might recognize the main deck –- it's where Cher filmed her (in)famous video, "If I Could Turn Back Time."

Admission to the Battleship USS Iowa
Admission prices are around $18 for adults and $15 for seniors, children (6-11) and current or former members of the military. Children 5 and under are admitted free.

Parking and public transportation to the Battleship USS Iowa
Parking costs about $2 per hour in the LA World Cruise Terminal next to the battleship. Free parking is available at Ports of Call Village, about a mile south. A free trolley that runs along the waterfront departs about every hour.

Metro bus lines 205 and 450 have stops nearby.

Food at the Battleship USS Iowa
Food isn't served at the museum, but Ports of Call Village has a few dining options, including the San Pedro Fish Market & Restaurant and the Ports O' Call Restaurant. Lunch and dinner at both restaurants range from about $10 to $30.

Insider tip for visitors to the Battleship USS Iowa
Visitors can save about two dollars on the admission prices by purchasing tickets online.
