History

In the 1870's, the giant Redwood tree hearkened to locals to find booths offering horse shooing and cart businesses. In 1890, it became part of the Klyce homestead. The Barn was built in 1902, with the first horse occupants--Tillie and Bessie. In 1954, Sam'l Newsom purchased the barn for an art studio, creating the garden, at the same time that he was designing and landscaping the world-famous Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park, in San Francisco. Sam'l opened a retail Bonsai store in downtown Mill Valley. Spring, 2013 issue, featured in Mill Valley Historical Society Review Magazine, titled
