Afsaneh Dance Academy

History

Ballet Afsaneh and the Afsaneh Art & Culture Society nonprofit under the direction of world dance pioneer, Sharlyn Sawyer, has produced critically acclaimed programs for San Francisco's M.H. De Young Museum, the Asian Art Museum, British Museum in London, and the Cabrillo Music Festival. They were honored by San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom for producing an annual Norouz (Persian New Year) event at SF City Hall, and are featured regularly in San Francisco's Ethnic Dance Festival at the Palace of Fine Arts Theater. The performance ensemble now performs both locally and internationally and also sponsors visiting artists during their visits to the United States. Afsaneh Dance Academy was established along with Ballet Afsaneh in order to offer public classes and other educational programs with the dance artists of Ballet Afsaneh, and workshops with collaborating guest artists.

Specialties

Afsaneh Dance Academy is the teaching program of the Afsaneh Art & Culture Society - Ballet Afsaneh. We offer exciting weekly classes and workshops in the San Francisco Bay Area for adults and youth. Explore and enjoy an amazing diversity of dance, music, and visual arts of the Silk Road. Offerings include traditional and contemporary dances from Central Asia; Iran, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, India, Turkey, Armenia, Chinese Turkestan, and more in a broad range of secular and sacred forms.
