Operational since 2002, Garvan Woodland Gardens is a more than 210-acre wooded peninsula that features a collection of shrubs, ornamental trees, waterfalls, cascades, lakes and recreational trails. It has over 160 types of azaleas; nearly 120 species of ornamental native shrubs and wildflowers; approximately 300 varieties of flowering perennials and groundcovers; and more than 65 varieties of Asian maples. The garden is home to over 70 species of native birds, including the pileated woodpecker, great blue heron, wild turkey and great horned owl, as well as the bald eagle. It additionally houses several native animals, such as raccoons, opossums, coyotes, armadillos, red foxes, white-tailed deer, and gray and red squirrels. The garden operates the Anthony Chapel, which hosts several wedding ceremonies and parties. It also organizes group tour options, as well as offers membership services. The garden provides facility and equipment rental services. It is maintained by the Department of Landscape Architecture through the University of Arkansas Foundation. Garvan Woodland Gardens is supported by the Arkansas Legislature, Arkansas Economic Development Commission, and Arkansas Natural and Cultural Resources Council.
