La Canasta Mexican Food Products, founded in 1962 by Richard & Carmen Abril, began its business as a tortilla factory that supplied fresh homemade tortillas to restaurants. By word of mouth, other Mexican Restaurants started requesting La Canasta Flour & Corn Tortillas. In 1974, Richard Abril passed away leaving Mrs. Abril and their seven children all under the age of 23 years old to carry on the business, which continued to prosper and grow prompting the expansion of the Manufacturing Facility in 1979.
