While Havasu Silent Witness works closely with the Lake Havasu City Police Department in Arizona, it is a separate, autonomous, nonprofit organization that was incorporated under the laws of the state of Arizona. The organization was started in 2000 by a group of volunteers for the purpose of providing people with a method to report a crime, the location of a fugitive or to give pertinent information about a crime while remaining anonymous. Cash rewards are given if the information results in the apprehension of a fugitive, the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrator of a crime or if information is of significant benefit to law enforcement. During the operational years of 2001 and 2002, information provided through HSW helped the police make nearly 50 arrests and recover approximately $470,300 in stolen property.
