The goal of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) specialist, also known as a physiatrist, is to restore and enhance function for patients who have physical disabilities caused by an accident or a neurological impairment caused by a stroke or a brain or spinal cord injury. You may be referred to a PM&R specialist because you have a disability affecting your bones, joints, ligaments, spinal cord, muscles, tendons or brain. Your PM&R specialist designs a treatment plan to decrease your pain and enhance your abilities without surgery. The plan may include medications as well as physical therapy.
