University of Alaska Fairbanks' Seward Marine Center
The Seward Marine Center (SMC) is a prominent marine research facility located in Seward, Alaska. Established in 1970, SMC supports research in fisheries, marine biology, and oceanography, and serves as a docking facility for marine research vessels. With its saltwater laboratory space, mooring facilities, and office support, SMC provides essential resources for visiting scientists, UAF graduate students, and staff and faculty of the UAF College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences.
Home to the renowned R V Sikuliaq, a 261-foot ice-capable research vessel, SMC plays a vital role in global oceanographic research. Additionally, SMC operates the state-of-the-art R V Nanuq, a 40-foot near-coastal research vessel that supports oceanographic and marine biology research. The center also hosts the Alaska Tsunami Bowl, an annual regional ocean sciences competition for high school students, and is a central feature in the Seward community and the Kenai Peninsula.
