Started in 1956 as a bar, Portage Glacier Lodge is a family-owned and operated day lodge today. The lodge operates under a special lease permit from the Department of Agriculture s Chugach National Forest. Its cafeteria s menu includes a selection of homemade soups, sandwiches, salads and desserts. The cafeteria operates an espresso bar that serves a range of specialty coffees and teas. In addition, Portage Glacier Lodge manages a gift gallery that maintains a collection of cards and books by various Alaskan artists and photographers. The gift gallery features a variety of Alaskan Indian and Eskimos artwork. It also offers themed gifts, handcrafted jewelry and hand-thrown pottery.
