Penguin Peak is a prominent mountain located in the Chugach Mountains of Alaska, offering stunning views of Turnagain Arm and the surrounding fjords. The trail to its summit is a challenging ascent that starts at sea level and requires hikers to navigate a steep avalanche gully, culminating in a rewarding scramble to the peak.

Access to the trail begins at the Bird Creek Valley Trailhead, where adventurers can embark on a three-mile trek characterized by dramatic scenery and the potential for wildlife encounters. While the trail is known for its steep and slippery conditions, it also presents opportunities for experienced hikers to traverse the entire Penguin Ridge, connecting Girdwood and Bird with breathtaking vistas along the way.

This one is short (maybe 2 miles, one way) and steep (over 4,000 ft of gain!)...even more so than nearby (and more crowded) Bird Ridge. The turnoff to this trial is easy to miss, it's not...
