Gavan Hill Trail in Sitka, AK offers a challenging and rewarding hiking experience with stunning views of Sitka Sound, Baranof Island, and Mt. Edgecumbe. This moderate to difficult trail spans 6 miles one-way, featuring steep climbs, stairs, roots, rocks, and log steps, as well as boardwalk sections that can be slippery when wet or icy.
Accessible via Harbor Mountain Road, this trail is the only alpine area in southeastern Alaska that can be reached by road. With recent restoration and re-routing by the US Forest Service, the trail now offers a smoother tread and rock benches for picnic spots. Hikers can also explore the Gavan Hill Trail, which connects to the Harbor Mountain Trail and terminates in Sitka on Baranof Street.
