The Guardian Credit Union was chartered in 1958 for the purpose of making short-term travel loans for full-time National Guard technicians waiting for reimbursement from the government. Its field of membership has since expanded to include a wider range of members, such as the Alabama Army and Air National Guard, Alabama Military Department and the Alabama departments of Agriculture and Industry, Finance Printing & Publication, Labor and Transportation. It is a nonprofit organization where every member has a vote at its annual membership meeting. The Guardian Credit Union is based in Montgomery, Ala.
