Cain's Merry Widows is a women's mystic society that was established in 1974 in Mobile, Alabama, the birthplace of the first Mardi Gras celebration in America in 1703. On Joe Cain Day, the Sunday before Fat Tuesday, members of this society don black mourning attire with veils, pay tribute to Joe Cain at his burial site, and then gather at his former residence to offer a heartfelt toast and eulogy to their beloved Joe.
With a rich history deeply rooted in the traditions of Mardi Gras, Cain's Merry Widows honor the legacy of Joe Cain, who is regarded as the heart and soul of Mobile's Mardi Gras festivities. Through their solemn yet celebratory rituals, this mystic society pays homage to the vibrant spirit of Mardi Gras and the enduring legacy of Joe Cain in the city of Mobile.
