The Jefferson County Historical Commission, established in 1971 by the Alabama State Legislature, is dedicated to documenting and recognizing the historic resources of Birmingham and Jefferson County. The Commission administers the Historical Marker Program and honors significant contributions to scholarship and preservation through the annual Thomas Jefferson Awards.

In addition to responding to inquiries about the rehabilitation and restoration of historic properties, the Commission offers strategies to facilitate research on local history. Despite currently operating without a physical office due to financial constraints, the Commission continues to provide valuable services and programs to the community.
