The Traffic Engineering Department is a division of the government of Huntsville, Ala. The department is responsible for providing safe, rapid, efficient, economical and environmentally compatible movement of people and goods through the streets and highways of the community. It attempts to fulfill this responsibility through the application of technology and scientific principles to the planning, functional design, operation and management of streets and highways. The department utilizes an intelligent transportation system that uses fiber optics, computers and cameras. In addition, the division publishes traffic counts; updates the index of county streets; coordinates the implementation of new traffic signals, pavement markings and signs; assigns addresses; approves public and private driveway modifications; and maintains a database of traffic crashes.
