The US Army Corps of Engineers, also known as USACE, is an organization of more than 34,000 civilians and over 650 military members. It employs a staff of scientists, biologists, engineers, geologists, hydrologists and natural resource managers who specialize in handling engineering and environmental matters. The organization performs jobs related to the military forces of the United States. The US Army Corps of Engineers plans, designs, builds and operates water resources and related civil works projects. It undertakes projects related to navigation, flood control, environmental protection and disaster management. The organization also constructs military facilities for the army and air force. In addition, the US Army Corps of Engineers provides design and construction management support services to several defense and federal agencies. It is headquartered in Washington, D.C., and operates the Engineer Research and Development Center, which consists of more than five laboratories. The organization is located in Mobile, Ala. The US Army Corps of Engineers additionally specializes in civil works and offers ecosystem restoration, environmental stewardship, radioactive site cleanup and dam safety services for the public.
