The Smithsonian National Zoological Park is a part of the Smithsonian Institution, the world s largest museum and research complex. The Smithsonian includes 18 museums and galleries, as well as the National Zoo. The National Zoo represents a large, complex, and diverse organization with a multifaceted mission: provide leadership in animal care, science, education and sustainability. It includes a 163-acre zoological park set amid Rock Creek Park in the heart of Washington, D.C. Open to the public 364 days a year, it is home to more than 2,400 individual animals of 400 different species. Its best-known residents are the giant pandas Tian Tian and Mei Xiang and their cub, Tai Shan. The zoo is one of Washington's and the Smithsonian's most popular tourist destinations and welcomes up to 3 million visitors free of charge.
