Studio Teatrgaleria

STUDIO Theatre is located in the Palace of Culture and Science and this iconic building designates the center of the city of Warsaw, Poland. The institution was set up in 1972 by Jozef Szajna, a stage designer, theatre director, painter and theatre theorist. Formally, he renamed the previously existing Teatr Klasyczny with classical repertoire and transformed it into a studio stage, experimental in nature, and open to new formal solutions. In 1972, a modern art gallery was opened at the Theatre and exist until today. The Golden Era for STUDIO was under the directorship of Jerzy Grzegorzewski (1982-1997). The original character of Grzegorzewski’s theatre, which on the one hand played refined and usually hermetic games with the heritage of European Modernism and on the other imposed demanding requirements on the actors, made the STUDIO one of the most interesting Warsaw theatres in the 1980’s and early 1990’s. In 2016, the artistic leadership was taken over by Natalia Korczakowska - a theatrical director. Currently, the institution is named STUDIO teatrgaleria and continues its original foundation. It is a creative venue hosting innovative experiments produced by artists representing a range of disciplines. In line with its avant-garde traditions, and with Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz as its patron, STUDIO has become a space for free expression, where different disciplines of art intersect and interact – including theatre, visual arts, music and film. In line with Witkacy's Theory of Pure Form, artists are offered the opportunity to perform aesthetic experiments.
