Adjacent to the famous Piazza Unità d’Italia and Teatro Verdi, in the most prestigious area of the city, Caffè Tommaseo owes its name to Tomaso Marcato, who founded it in 1830. He came to Trieste as many people at that time for commercial reasons, and was the first to introduce the purchase of icecream in town. Known to be one of the premises where irredentism was born, Caffè Tommaseo was loved by many greats of the past: Besenghi, Svevo, Joyce, Stuparich, Quarantotti Gambini and Umberto Saba. Since 1954 Caffè Tommaseo is protected as a historic and artistic monument and honored of the title “locale storico d’Italia”.
