Wingate Quarry Local Nature Reserve is a Site of Special Scientific Interest located in Wheatley Hill, County Durham. Formerly a quarry for Magnesian Limestone rock, it has transformed into Durham County Council's first Local Nature Reserve, showcasing diverse habitats including grassland, woodland, wetland, and scrub.
The reserve is home to over 34 species of wildflowers, such as the common spotted orchid and butterwort, a carnivorous plant. Visitors can enjoy two suggested circular routes, allowing for free exploration within the open access land, making it a refuge for both rare plants and wildlife.
