207 High Street
Lincoln, England LN5 7AU
The High Bridge is the only medieval bridge in England with houses upon it. The timber framed houses built in 1540 were bricked over in the 19th century covering up all their charm. Fortunately, a restoration of the fine medieval-style building took place in 1902 under the supervision of Lincoln architect William Watkins whereby the houses were stripped down to the beams, before being re-plastered. Most of the timber beams visible today are original, dating back to the 1600's. During the renovation, carvings of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra were added in the top corners of the building to celebrate their Coronation which took place that same year. The unique features of the underside of the bridge can only be seen by boat, but the interior of the building can be appreciated whilst enjoying a coffee or tea at Stokes High Bridge café, the occupants since the early 20th Century.
