Bennerley Viaduct, known as the Iron Giant of the Erewash Valley, is a remarkable Grade II listed structure that stands 20 metres high and stretches a quarter of a mile in length. Built in 1877-78 by the Great Northern Railway, it is the longest Victorian wrought iron viaduct in the UK and a testament to British engineering prowess.
After closing to trains in the 1960s, the viaduct has undergone a revival under the stewardship of the Friends of Bennerley Viaduct, reopening in 2022 for walkers, cyclists, and heritage enthusiasts. Future plans include additional visitor facilities and a new footbridge to enhance community access and further conservation efforts around this historic landmark.
