Farm stay chambres d'hotes (bed and breakfast) in the heart of the Perigordine countryside. 2 Spacious en-suite bedrooms overlooking indiginous woodland. Peaceful, calm and beautiful all year round. In the summer you can chill on the big terrace overlooking the garden, swim and laze around the pool, and walk along the woodland paths which start right at the house. In the winter these same woodland walks have a different feel as the trees lose their leaves, but just as stunning in their own way. On cold days there is always a wood burning stove in our big kitchen to warm you up on your return with a cup of tea. Spring time brings a host of wild flowers in the woods, starting often in late February with the best display of daffodils imaginable. Cugnac has a long and fascinating history. There is a dolmen in the woods clearly going back to pre-history, and we have had visits from hisorians from all over the world to investigate. Our house is built on the huge vaulted stables, all that is left of the old Chateau de Cugnac, dating from the 13th century. Under the house there is a rock cave with a water source forming an underground pond - a big favourite with visitors and historians alike. We are a small organic arable farm, with our own land and woods completely surrounding the house. We work in partnership with our organic dairy farm neighbours, and often have some of their cows and calves in our fields. We have two horses of our own who have been with us for the past 20 years and are now enjoying peaceful retirement. Completely free range, our hens provide quite delicious eggs for your breakfasts. We have a wide range of fruit trees of old varieties, and we make all our own jams from their fruit. Another neighbour provides us with honey from his lovingly managed hives. Everything is local! We make our own bread from flour milled by a retired farmer 8 kms away. He grows his own selection of wheat to make the best bread flour possible. He loves to show people around the watermill that he restored on the river Dropt, and it is fun to see just how the flour is made, as it was in ancient times. From Cugnac you are 10 - 15 minutes drive to some of the most famous bastide villages of the Dordogne - Monpazier, Beaumont, Villereal, Issigeac, Castillones, each with its weekly market for local produce. These villages also have restaurants for all tastes which we are happy to book for you in advance of your arrival if you let us know your tastes. We can also prepare tables d'hotes for you if you prefer to stay in on some evenings. In the summer there are great picnic spots on the property. This is a lovely area to explore by bike. There is hardly any traffic, and wonderful countryside to enjoy as you cycle. We have nice bikes that you can borrow while you are here.
