1807 Telegraph Ave
Oakland, CA 94612

In 1928, thousands of patrons flocked to the Fox Theater to watch a performance on the Mighty Wurlitzer followed by the latest "talkie." The opulent domed hall, with its eclectic mix of terra cotta tiles, detailed paintings and gold deities, drew as much, if not more, attention than its first-run productions.

The Fox closed in 1966 and suffered decay, leaks, and an arson fire until it reopened more than 40 years later. The venue now hosts live music that ranges from urban to jazz to hard rock. Its grand reopening also ushered the revitalization of Oakland's Uptown district, which boasts a dizzying array of bars, restaurants, and shops.
