Cranger Kirmes
Over eleven days, the Cranger Kirmes attracts around four million visitors to the fairground on the Rhine-Herne Canal every year. Always on the first Friday in August, the mayor of Herne opens the largest fair in North Rhine-Westphalia. The opening ceremony in the Crange festival hall includes the traditional tapping of the barrel and the cry "Piel op no Crange!" followed by eleven gun salutes. With over 500 showmen, the Cranger Kirmes is the second largest fair in Germany and a highlight in the summer of events. Visitors can expect thrills, speed and a large portion of fun on around 50 rides, shows and running rides. Especially noteworthy: the atmosphere of the family funfair is characterised by the unusual layout of the shops on the fairground and the numerous Heckenwirtschaften – cosy beer gardens in the backyards of many local residents. The opening and closing fireworks are an experience for the whole family.
