The teacher Richard Schirrmann established the first permanent youth hostel in the world in 1912 in Altena Castle which is near of the river Lenne. The museum and the infotainment elevator ("Erlebnisaufzug") lead the visitors from the Stone Age to the present. Visitors can do various activities in the region for example visiting the show cave "Dechen Cave" ("Dechenhöhle") located in the city of Iserlohn, Hohenlimburg Castle in the city of Hagen or the "Sauerlandpark" in the city of Hemer. A lot of hiking and biking routes as well as water reservoirs are nearby.
